ENIGMA CURRY

This is a log of all the calls that I've made to Free Talk Live

Wow, been way too long since I called. I wanted to call Ian out a little bit on an issue that I think he has glossed over, many, many times on air Ian has talked about how he thinks that intellectual property either does not exist or that it should not be protected (which is the same thing in my mind). I wanted to show him how intellectual property does indeed exist and should be protected.

While I think that my analogy of money was a good one, I think that an even better one could have been if I drew an analogy between property that I leave out on the street, vs property that I protect within the confines of my home. If I leave a valuable vase on the side of the street, I can claim that its mine, I can show my receipt of purchase whatever, but because I show no concern for protecting that vase, what right do I have to claim that someone who picks the vase up has aggressed against me? As far as he's likely concerned, he picked up refuse on the side of the street. If however, I keep the vase locked up inside my home, and this man breaks into my house and steals it, I have a much greater case.

The same can be said of intellectual property. If I write a poem and post it in mass-email spam, then do I really have a good case against someone who republishes that poem? No. However, if I keep that poem safe, and I contract with someone that wants to hear my poem, but on condition that they share it with no one, then I have declared my right to the poem at hand. Rights imply property, because all rights derive from property.

I think Ian may be catching on to this fact, but I think he's still a bit confused.

Ian has produced an awesome audio book of the Tannehill's great Free Marketeer manifesto: The Market for Liberty. I wanted to call and congratulate Ian on such a great contribution to the world. I also wanted to hear Ian and Gard's take on what exactly a "sacrifice" is as the Tannehill's, I felt, did not clearly define the term.

I should have prepared more before my call.. I was struggling to make the right words come out of my mouth today. Oh well.

Modchips, although often used for piracy, have many diverse uses. Ian had already brought up the fact that they can be used to play legally backed up games. I called in to also bring up the fact that Linux, as well as 3rd party homebrew apps, are also a very valid use of modchips.

Mark is totally right when he corrected me on my calling the status quo "Mob Rule". It isn't mob rule, it's Fascism -- it's about corporate desires and the government enforcing them. Had I been writing a blog post on this topic, I surely would have recognized that. It can be really hard to keep a clear head when you know you're going onto national radio :)

I called in to plug the Read the Bills Act by showing how the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 wasn't read by congress because it was voted on only 20 minutes before the final draft was printed.
